Live Performance: Domenico De Clario and Mindy Meng Wang - 21 September from 6.15 on MARS Rooftop

Beyond Tonglen is a new series of plein air blindfolded paintings by Domenico De Clario, exhibiting from 21 September at MARS Gallery.

In collaboration with musician Mindy Meng Wang and body artist Tony Yap, Domenico De Clario will be presenting an improvised performance at the equinox from dusk to dawn on the MARS rooftop.

Along with the live performance, a series of paintings made on squares of woven carpet evidence the range of sensory experiences that overcame the artist when painting blindfolded.

The 30-day painting journey begins at the precise moment the full moon reaches its apogee; 12.38 pm on the afternoon of the 17th of July 2019. Thereafter the making of a blindfolded painting begins one hour later on each subsequent day; until the end of the lunar cycle. Measuring fifty by fifty centimetres, each of the thirty paintings are made at a particular location in the Tonglen burial site. Unconscious of time De Clario sits blindfolded in the garden and investigates his own sense of self and the entirety of our human existence.

"The paintings are not representations of the visible world but simply energetic expressions of a moment in time as the artist gradually becomes immersed as best he can in the phenomenological world around him."

Domenico de Clario is an interdisciplinary artist, academic, writer and musician based in Mildura. Born in Trieste, Italy, in 1947, De Clario has studied architecture and town planning at Melbourne University, painting at Milan's Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and lithography at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. He has been the recipient of numerous national and international residencies and grants, including the Australia Council Fellowship. His work is represented in major public and private collections both in Australia and worldwide.
