In the 200th anniversary of Dickensʼ birth, as part of the atyp (Australian Theatre for Young People) Under The Wharf season, bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company presents a thrilling new adaptation of Great Expectations, opening 2 November.

In a dynamic re-imagining of the book, a youthful and energetic ensemble takes audiences on a journey that stretches from murky Kentish marshes to bustling London streets, embracing the colourful spectacle of Dickens’ original novel, in an adaptation brimming with laughter, beauty and mystery.

When Pipʼs tainted childhood dream is granted by a mysterious benefactor he is plunged into a world of extraordinary encounters and twists of fate. A world where you have to be careful what you wish for… where beautiful girls are used as weapons… where dark secrets unravel and come home to roost. And where nothing is more important than knowing who you are and where you came from.

Charles Dickensʼ unforgettable masterpiece casts a spell of unrequited love and longing; of revenge, betrayal and redemption; of the elusive nature of dreams and the corrosive power of ambition.

In a fresh and strikingly bold adaptation – originally commissioned for the Royal Shakespeare Company, London - Cheek by Jowl’s Nick Ormerod and Declan Donnellan (UK) retell the dark and dazzling classic through a cast of Dickensʼ most memorable characters: the enigmatic Magwitch, the big-hearted Joe Gargery, the eccentric Jaggers, and the tortured recluse Miss Havisham armed with her creation, the chillingly irresistible Estella.

Directed by John Harrison, bAKEHOUSE Theatre’s production at atyp features Shannon Ashlyn, Jarrod Crellin, Alan Dearth, Cheyne Fynn, Kieran Foster, Sophie Haylen, Stephen Lloyd-Coombs, Richard Hilliar, Daniel Hunter, Jim McCrudden, Callum McManis, Jacki Mison, Jessica Paterson, Rebecca Saffir and Patrick Sherwood.
