The dashing Overture to Ferdinand Hérold’s post-revolutionary opera Zampa is full of drama. Zampa is a pirate chief who tries to force the beautiful Camille to marry him, but she ingeniously manages to slip the engagement ring onto the finger of a marble statue, which comes to claim Zampa at his wedding feast and drowns him in the sea.
The series of eight symphonies by Scandinavian composer Niels Wilhelm Gade blends essentially classical form and romantic expression, in the tradition of Spohr, Mendelssohn and Schumann, but adding to the mix a hint of Nordic folk music. At its first performance, conducted by the composer in 1852, the audience was surprised by the fact that it included an important piano part, ‘inlaid’ into the texture, in all four movements.
Featured soloist for this concert is the Sinfonia’s own distinguished leader, Alastair Duff-Forbes. Conductor and founder of the Sinfonia, Gary Stavrou says it is a great pleasure to feature him in the famous Mendelssohn concerto. This is the first time Alastair has appeared as “solo” soloist, having performed in tandem previously with violist Charlotte Fetherston and cellist Georg Pedersen.
Alastair’s involvement in music began playing the violin at the age of five and the piano at seven. He attended the Conservatorium High School on scholarship and completed a Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium, majoring in violin performance under the SSO’s Goetz Richter. Since then, he has won a number of scholarships including the Matteson & Nancy Roberts Scholarship and the Chapple Bremner Award. Alastair graduated with honours at the end of 2004 and studied for a Master of Music in violin performance under Chris Kimber and Carl Pini. As a soloist, Alastair has performed many concerti including the Barber Violin Concerto with the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, the Mozart A Major Violin Concerto with Orchestra 143 and the Bach Double Violin Concerto. He is currently Concertmaster of Balmain Sinfonia.
