Cuttlefish Bone casting demonstrations on the Mornington Peninsula
Contemporary Gold and Silversmith Katrina Newman will be demonstrating the technique of cuttlefish bone casting on Sundays 13th and 20th November 2016 at 2:30pm as part of the Peninsula Studio Trail open studio weekends.

Expect to fill all your senses at one of Katrina Newman's demonstrations: - there's the
smell of the burning cuttlefish bone, the heat of the gas, the noise of the torch,
and the excitement of watching as the silver becomes molten and is carefully
poured into the cuttlefish bone mould.
Katrina will talk you through the process from carving the cuttlefish to casting. "It really is quite simple, I start by cutting the cuttlefish bone in half, then I carve out a basic design, I re-join the two cuttlefish halves together with wire, before heating the silver and pouring it carefully into the cast." Back in her studio you can learn about the finishing stages of her beautiful and refined contemporary jewellery, it is here that most of the hard work is done as Katrina takes a very rough cast to a highly polished work of art that she sells directly from her studio.
Katrina's jewellery is contemporary, some might say bold statement pieces, they reflect her love of the sea and the Australian landscape. Katrina has been a resident of the Mornington Peninsula for over 17 years, taking up the art of Cuttlefish bone casting shortly after moving to our local shores.
In November Katrina opens her studio in conjunction with the Peninsula Studio Trail artists on Saturday and Sunday 12,13, & 19, 20 November 2016 from 10am- 5pm. Katrina also opens her studio regularly throughout the year and by appointment.
Katrina studied Gold and Silversmithing at Canberra School of Art graduating in 1983. 2016 marks her 30th anniversary of practice. Katrina works from her bush studio with sea views on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula.
