Curtin to become the canvas for internationally acclaimed street artists

Published by: FORM | 16-Feb-2016
An international who's who of urban artists will be turning Curtin University's Bentley Campus into a canvas this April 4-10 as part of PUBLIC2016, FORM's festival of urban activation and art. #PUBLIC2016 #TheGoodsShed @curtinuni
Tunisian artist Karim Jabbari, Portuguese muralist Add Fuel and street artist Millo will be creating extraordinary murals and installations alongside Indian Ranjit Dahiya, Russian muralist Rustam Qbic and Italian artist Tellas.

As the semester will be in full swing, Curtin's 40,000 plus students, staff and the wider public will experience the artworks taking form across the walls of the university. There will also be guided artwork tours and a campus wind up party where the People's Choice Award for PUBLIC Platform will be announced.

The international contingent will be joined by an exciting line up of soon-to-be announced Western Australian street artists and one of the artists behind PUBLIC2015's epic 38 metre Wheatbelt grain silo murals, American HENSE, returning to Western Australia to take on one of his most unique projects yet. PUBLIC CAMPUS will also feature a special collaboration blending artwork by Spanish street artist Borondo with Edoardo Tresoldi's wire mesh sculpture in a world class on-campus installation.

FORM Executive Director Lynda Dorrington said she hoped the imagery would transmit some of the wonder, excitement and sheer excellence of the artistic experience.

"It's about using culture and creativity to enrich the way in which we live, work and learn. Finding ways to improve our places, neighbourhoods and cities for the good of all is a central theme. A university campus is a perfect place to put some of these ideas into action." Ms Dorrington said.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the University was delighted to be partnering with leading arts development organisation FORM in providing a public showcase of the latest work from international and WA street artists.

"We are really looking forward to inviting the public to our campus to experience such an innovative exhibition," Professor Terry said.

"This project reflects our international focus and supports the recent announcement of Curtin being named as one of the most multi-cultural universities in Australia.

"As a leading centre for design, art, architecture and urban planning research and study, Curtin is a perfect venue to embrace large scale, innovative artistic expression."

PUBLIC2016 events also include Western Australia's first ever prototyping festival, PUBLIC Platform; a speaker series engaging our state's most imaginative minds, and a preview of Perth's newest creative hub and community space, The Goods Shed in Claremont.

PUBLIC will also travel into the regions: watch this space for announcements about more regional silos and a program of artworks across walls in Albany.

We hope you will consider featuring PUBLIC CAMPUS for your audiences in the lead up to PUBLIC2016.
