Creative Challenge Perth students proud of artworks exhibited at AWESOME Festival

Published by: Samantha Martin | 14-Oct-2020
Students from North Balga Primary School and Bentley Primary School exhibited artworks at the AWESOME Festival from the 2020 Creative Challenge Metro artist in residency program, proudly supported by Crown Resorts and Packer Foundation.
Exhibited artworks were created in collaborative process driven workshops with WA multidisciplinary artists Jodie Davidson, Addam, Esther Longhurst, Kero O'Shea and St John Cowcher across 40 workshops this year.

Featured in the AWESOME Arts Festival 2020 program of events, the State Library of WA's theatre foyer space was transformed into a cardboard community to exhibit the imagination of North Balga Primary School students who crafted small cityscapes out of paper and recycled materials. The students were encouraged to explore and reflect on their experiences of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, and what community means to them. Wood cut out creatures were exhibited at the festival that will ultimately be added to a colourful school mural.

Bentley Primary School exhibited a selection of photographs, paper flowers and their impressive 5-metre poster to advertise their film project, BENTLEY CARES'. The school has been working with artists on puppetry, improvisation, documentary and filmmaking. The Year 4/5 students and Pre-Primary/ Year 1 students will continue workshops and present their films and puppetry performances during Term 4.

Children involved in the Creative Challenge Perth Program visited the exhibition on excursions to the AWESOME festival. Students and teachers involved in the program were very proud of their masterpieces on display to the West Australian community.

The enthusiasm and excitement shared by both the young artists and festivalgoers reflected a strong connection to identity as part of the 2020 AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge Theme, Tell Me More.

Creative Challenge Perth aims to engage culturally and linguistically diverse children in creative process with professional artists to explore self-expression and community pride whilst learning valuable project management skills.

The AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge Perth program will continue in schools for the next 3 weeks.
