In July 2022 AWESOME Artists Martine Perret and David Dare Parker travelled out to Wiluna on Martu Country. They delivered a two-week Creative Challenge during the School Term 3 at the local Youth Centre.

Children aged between 8 and 15 visited the community centre to explore the 2022 Creative Challenge theme of Wonder using photography, behind the scenes imagery and special photography effects.

Pairing two kids per camera, participants were encouraged to share and document each other, producing behind the scenes imagery. The students learnt camera effects and were encouraged to think creatively.” Artists Martine and David said.

“They learnt how to use double-exposure and comic making effects as well as motion blur, depth of field and still life. Participants also explored documentary skills - photographing activities such as bike riding, playing pool, basketball and portraiture using a dark background. the students learnt new skills under guidance of both photographers. A slideshow of participants’ photographs and 100 photographs were printed and archived at center”

The artworks created by the participants are celebrated by being showcased at Wiluna Youth Centre as a slideshow, almost 100 unique pieces were made by the participants. The children and families could take their pieces home as a memento of the residency or leave them on display at the Youth Centre for the community to enjoy! This residency was proudly supported by BHP.

Creative Challenge strives to build pride, break down barriers, and encourage students to see art as a way to connect to their community. Wonder celebrates the voices of young people and invites them to imaginatively explore the surprising and beautiful world around them, foster curiosity and dream about tomorrow.
