A world first and running as a part of the 2018 Craft Cubed Festival, Melbourne Arts and Craft lovers are invited to a weeklong exhibition celebrating the launch of well-known Craftivist Sayraphim Lothian's new book; 'Guerrilla Kindness and Other Acts of Creative Resistance: Making A Better World Through Craftivism.'

Open to the public from the 23rd to the 28th of August, the exhibition will include a large array of pieces from the book and there will also be three exclusive workshops available to attend during the week, instructed by Sayraphim herself.

A fresh, unique voice of resistance, Craftivism is a non-threatening form of activism that gives people an avenue to fight back when they feel stifled, and power where they feel powerless. It is an international movement for our time and noted expert Sayraphim Lothian has now created the world's first tutorial book on this revolutionary style of activism.

With 'Guerrilla Kindness and Other Acts of Creative Resistance: Making A Better World Through Craftivism' artist, scholar, activist, and YouTube educator Sayraphim Lothian offers people an introduction to the art of Craftivism. The book provides a brief history of creative resistance, with clear guides on how to make and use various crafts for political and protest purposes including; embroidery, cross stitch, baking, knitting, crochet, stencilling, stamping, and much more.

Tackling a large array of topics including Queer rights, Fat activism, #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, Aboriginal land rights, Disability rights, Feminism and Veganism, this revolutionary new guide was meticulously researched and written and then proofed by sensitivity editor, Jax Jackie Brown - a disabled queer activist.

A growing worldwide movement in which hand crafted works are being used to highlight political issues, Craftivism encourages change in the world by creatively engaging in activism. While it might seem that this colourful movement began recently, creative resistance has been with us for centuries.

"There are a number of great books about Craftivism, but they almost all focus on the big three crafts - knitting, crochet and sewing.", explains Author and Craftivist, Sayraphim Lothian.

"While I love those crafts, I felt there were lots of other mediums that were being left out of the activist's arsenal. The book merges two of the things I'm most passionate about - craft and activism. There's lots of ways to be an activist and not everyone feels comfortable participating in protest rallies. It's always great to be able to turn the skills you love to the causes you support."

The three workshops running across the week compliment the guide and exhibition, and include:

Guerrilla Kindness - Which merges the concept of guerrilla art with the idea of random acts of kindness. It involves making small hand crafted artworks to leave around the streets of cities of the world for people to find and take; practising random acts of Guerrilla Kindness to lift people's mood and make them happy.

Saturday 25 August, 12:30pm - 2:00pm
Workshop Tickets: $20

Paper Pieced Hexie Quilt: Your History in Hexies - Do you have beloved clothes that are too old to wear anymore? Clothes so worn through at knees, elbows, and bums that you can't wear them but they're so saturated with history and memories that you can't throw them out? Or did you inherit a relative's stash of materials and not sure what to do with it? In this class participants will be taught to reuse these precious items to create beautiful hexie (hexagonal) quilts to hold the memories close, while keeping warm. Saturday 25 August, 3:00 - 4:30pm Workshop Tickets: $20 Tickets and full information: www.sayraphimlothian.com/booklaunch

Craftivist Cross Stitch - In this workshop participants will be looking at the growing worldwide Craftivism movement, focusing on various projects that employ different types of crafts to spread their message. From anti-war cross stitch protests to personalising urban environment via sneaky guerrilla knitting, from raising awareness about the gender pay gap through to baking and guerrilla mosaics protesting the death penalty in the US, craft can (and has) been utilised for almost every cause.
