CONTACT photographic exhibition
Exhibition of threatened aboriginal rock art galleries from the Arnhem Land plateau at Photonet Gallery, Fairfield, Victoria, showing paintings from the First Contact period (mid-19th century onwards)
CONTACT - an exhibition of photographs by Darwin-based photographer DAVID HANCOCK for WARDDEKEN LAND MANAGEMENT - traditional owners of this country in western Arnhem Land and custodians of the rock art galleries of this region. The paintings show with great clarity the impact of first contact between the indigenous people of the area and European explorers. The paintings say "Wow! You'll never believe what I've seen......!:" - horses, chooks, goats, boats, guns, men wearing trousers and hats, smoking pipes...... expressed by the artists in traditional style as they try to illustrate the unimaginable. These relatively recent artworks are threatened by wind, fire, weather, animals and vegetation growth in what is nowadays virtually uninhabited country and the traditional owners are working to conserve this important part of their heritage.
