The SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra, in its 25th anniversary year, perform three classical works with Chief Conductor, Thomas Tsai, at Riverside Theatres on Sunday 8 September 2013. The performance opens with Brahms Tragic Overture, which was a companion piece to his Academic Festival Overture. Brahms intended each to reflect a mood (one tears, the other laughter). This concert opens with tears. Next, the orchestra performs Haydn’s final Symphony No. 104, known as The London Symphony which was written and premièred in London in 1795 under the directorship of the composer. The orchestra ends with Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony, which is arguably the most famous motif in musical history. Premiering in Vienna in 1808 and directed by Beethoven in a massive concert of four hours duration, the SBS Youth Orchestra delivers a spectacular rendition of this timeless piece, making sure you leave this performance on a classical high.

The SBS Radio & Television Youth Orchestra was formed in 1988 by Russian-born conductor Matthew Krel with the help of the Special Broadcasting Service in Sydney. One of its unique aims is to give young musicians experience in performing for national broadcast on television and radio. Its members are aged twelve to twenty-four.
