CloudCUCKOOland - A Karaoke Musical

BY heartBeast Vicious Theatre Ensemble | 04-Jan-2013
Begin your theatre adventures in 2013 with a home grown, feel good, song and dance story about local dreamers who have gone to the birds. CloudCUCKOOLand is a transformation play, inspired by the real stories of local karaoke singers. It is based on a bold reimagining of Aristophane’s ancient Greek comedy, The Birds. In this cacophony of song, dance and comedy, heartBeast’s latest work places the audience right in the heart of the action. Purchase a drink before the show and enjoy it seated at one of our on-stage, cabaret style tables. Written & adapted by Michael Beh in conjunction with the heartBeast vicious theatre ensemble, CloudCUCKOOLand features timeless classics and hit songs from the 60s to the naughties, exploring the stories of this precious flock of characters, ranging from one ordinary night in the karaoke to the great competition performance.

"What a glittering thing this world can be"

Lance was back running the karaoke but someone ruffled his feathers and away he flew, leaving the nest to Amber Sky, the hype-tense stage manager and Stevie, the ubercool, ultra fashionable club owner. Joelene is a country and western cougar, who has just arrived in town. JJ is a returned serviceman looking for the meaning of life. Tiger is a car mechanic obsessed with old fashioned rock and roll. Zeus believes he is a god, Calypso is a faded soapie actress. Andy is the boy next door with a secret, Delilah is a triple threat and Lady Nightingale is a temptress beyond your wildest imagination.

Into this mix lands Dawn, an angel with a point to make. Multi-talented veteran of the Australian stage and screen, Warwick Comber, leads the talented heartBeast ensemble: Brian Bolton, Samantha Cable, Tegan Devine, Karen Dinsdale, Anna O’Hara, Jacqueline McCarthy Kerr, Hamish Nicholson, Jacob Paint and Emily Pollard. Directors: Michael Beh & Michelle Carey, Choreographer: Tegan Devine, Costume Designer: Jan Mandrusiak, Stage Manager: Adrienne Costello, Lighting Designer: Jason Harding, Sound Designer: Peter Crees In 2012 Brisbane reviewers described heartBeast productions as “dream-like, powerful, unique, glorious, wonderful, avant-garde, remarkable, intriguing, beautifully crafted, fantastic, genuinely memorable." In 2013 heartBeast embarks on its 3rd year of staging exciting, unique theatre in Brisbane with two amazing new productions, CloudCUCKOOLand in February and Vivien Leigh’s School for Scandal in October.
