2016 City of Albany Art Prize finalists announced

The coveted City of Albany Art Prize is back for its ninth year, with artworks from across Australia to be exhibited in a national showcase of contemporary painting.

Thirty finalists from Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory have been announced after a competitive selection process.

The distinguished selection panel comprised of the Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia Stefano Carboni, Director of Contemporary Art Tasmania Michael Edwards and Curator of the Murdoch University collection Mark Stewart.

Great Southern artists Samantha Dennison, Paul Moncrieff and Shaun Wake-Mazey were named among the finalists.

The Prize is open to artists working in Australia and features a $25,000 Major Acquisitive Prize supported by the Jack Family Charitable Trust, which includes a four week studio residency in a self-contained cottage at Albany's Vancouver Arts Centre with $2,500 for associated expenses.

In addition to the Major Acquisitive Prize, a Commendation Award of $2,500 also sponsored by the Jack Family Charitable Trust and a People's Choice Award of $2,500 sponsored by the City of Albany are awarded.

City of Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington congratulated the finalists and those who had taken the time to submit their artwork.

"The number of submissions and quality of artwork improves every year and we look forward to adding another stunning piece of artwork to the City of Albany's sizeable art collection," Mayor Wellington said.

Volunteer gallery attendants are required for the exhibition. Bookings can be made through the Vancouver Arts Centre, 9841 9260 or arts@albany.wa.gov.au.
