In August 2022 AWESOME Artists Mal Webb and Kylie Morrigan travelled to Nullagine Primary School on Martu Country to explore song writing, videos and storytelling with three groups of students. This residency was supported by Healthway and the Go for 2 & 5 message.

The junior, upper Primary and Senior students collaborated on many exciting song-writing elements about their community, guided by the Creative Challenge 2022 theme of wonder.

They worked with expressing aspects of words, rhyming, music styles, recording techniques and editing. As inspiring stories began to emerge the young artists selected their favourites and combined them together to create a narrative that reflected their favourite parts of their local community.

Through this creative process the participants combined their one-off songs with video, developing 3 creative films were created to accompany the song. These finished music videos were titled Geometry, the Nullagine River and Bull Catching Day.

A school assembly was called to celebrate the student’s achievements, including a showcase of the 3 songs with video including a performance of the song by each group of young artists. School teachers and all students attended and applauded the young artists on their creative work!

The song and video ‘Geometry’ completed by the Senior students at Nullagine was selected to be exhibited at the AWESOME Intonational Arts Festival for Bright Young Things!
