Painting the Australian landscape while exposed to the elements as it rapidly changes is truly a wondrous experience, and designer-turned-artist Alison Percy captures that wonder expertly in her en plein air paintings.

The layering of calligraphic line is Percy's felt response to the evident change in season across many visits to Alpine areas and North-East Victoria, and was the catalyst for this exhibition. The use of intuitive fluid line reflects an honest connection through her as an artist and onto the surface.

This body of work is a series of gouache paintings produced en plein air and acrylic paintings produced on canvas back in the studio.

Captured Landscapes opens at Melbourne's iconic gallery fortyfivedownstairs in May 2018.

Alison Percy is a visual artist living close to the Murray River in Albury. Growing up on the land saw her immersed in nature from an early age. Studying, working and tutoring in the creative industries has been Percy's life and a shift from design to visual art is no surprise "“ coming full circle to now focus full time on drawing and painting.

Percy's energetic and passionate nature reflects across landscape, floral and figurative works which varies from a loose and instinctive mark to one that is highly considered. Intuitive use of fluid line initiates an honest connection through the artist and onto the surface using ink, charcoal, soft pastel, watercolour, acrylic and gouache onto canvas and paper.

A passion for life drawing inspires endless exploration into the nuances of the human figure and the development of techniques and use of media. Inspired by natural forms, Percy's first Melbourne solo exhibition Captured Landscapes reflects her continued fascination in the balance and sensitivity of fluid line "“ painting in the studio and most recently out in the landscape en plein air.
