In Term 3 of 2023, artists Lewis Horne & Mace Francis travelled to Nannup District High School, on the lands of the Wardandi Bibbulmen people, to explore traditional lantern making, creating instruments and original music.

Inspired by the theme of "Bloom", Nannup students built large-scale flower shaped lanterns, inspired by traditional Chinese lantern making techniques. This included creating structural shapes using cane, cardboard, metal and paper. They were then decorated with coloured paper, paint, objects, material and lights.

Participants also made musical shaker instruments using drinking vessels decorated to look like bees, which accompanied the flower sculptures. The students used these bee instruments to devise an original song.

The lantern sculptures were presented to the whole school community at a celebration event on the last day. The band performed their original song, with all other students performing with them, using the shakers they made. An unexpected outcome of the residency was the inclusion of the lantern’s sculptures within the Nannup Flower & Garden Festival, the weekend after the residency took place!

Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.

This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2 & 5 message.
