The prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia is marking its 40th Anniversary with a new National Recital Series, announcing Japanese artist Ayako Uehara will return to Australia for the second time since winning the People"s Choice in the internationally renowned Competition 17 years ago.

The National Recital Series will see some of the Competition"s most highly regarded artists return for a compelling set of performances across both regional and metropolitan Australia. From the bright and forward tones of Japan"s Ayako Uehara and the commanding presence of Russia"s Konstantin Shamray, to last year"s winner Andrey Gugnin providing superb entertainment throughout 2017.

Making her professional debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in the 2005/06 season, Ayako Uehara, has become one of Japan"s most celebrated female pianists. She was the first woman (and Japanese) to win first prize in the 12th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (2002) and prior to that the People"s Choice Award at the memorable 2000 Sydney International Piano Competition.

Ms Uehara is looking forward to returning to Australia, with performances in Melbourne and Sydney on June 5-6th and a "fantasy" inspired program from Mozart to Liszt.

"Sydney, and Australia as a whole, is among my favourite places in the world. Seventeen years ago, when I was not yet twenty, I received a warm welcome at the Competition in Sydney which helped launch my international career, and I have had many invaluable experiences on concert tours since then.

"Never for a moment have I forgotten the wonderful people I met in Australia. I am sincerely looking forward to seeing you all again," said Ms Uehara.

Multiple competition prize-winner, and recipient of the Competition"s 2016 People"s Best Choice Award, Ming Xie, began the National Recital Tour in March this year with a stunning series of performances, achieving accolades and rave reviews for his ability to both captivate the audience and seize their imagination.

About the Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia

The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia has, from its inception, held events at the highest international level inspiring pianists and audiences alike and stimulating interest in piano and music in general. It has provided a showcase platform for outstanding pianists from all over the world and assisted with the development of their careers as concert artists.
Founded by the late Miss Claire Dan AM, OBE and Rex Hobcroft AM, it was inaugurated in July 1977 and has since been held every four years, except in 1988 when it was brought forward to coincide with the Bicentenary of Australia celebrations. The Competition was admitted as a member of the Geneva based World Federation of International Music Competitions in 1978, the first Australian competition to be accepted as a member.
