AWESOME Arts takes to the regions through Creative Challenge program

Published by: AWESOME Arts | 15-Dec-2020
Interdisciplinary artist Matt Aitken and creative facilitator Samuel Sisti travelled to Leonora on the traditional lands of the Wangkatha people last month, to work with the students of Leonora District High School for a two-week AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge residency proudly supported by BHP. Matt Aitken's multifaceted practice is engaged with community arts and mixed media arts, so our AWESOME artists-in-residence packed up their bags with an exciting array of sculpture medias, paints, recording devices, cameras and musical instruments.
Venue: Leonora District High School
Date: 9th “ 20th November 2020
Creative Challenge is AWESOME's core education program. When they're not running the festival, AWESOME Arts send artists into schools to offer high quality arts experiences for young people to explore their individual and community identity, communicate their unique identity and instil a sense of pride in who they are and where they live.

The students used this year's Creative Challenge theme Tell Me More to explore themes of pride and reconciliation, drawing inspiration from the Dada and Punk Art movements. The residency creative process included video and still photography; audio field recordings and digital music production; mobile sculptures out of cane, wire, papier-mâché and textiles; and collage and screen-printing techniques.

At the end of the residency, the artworks were curated into multi-artform exhibition unveiled at a community celebration. The exhibition reflected the rich community identity of Leonora, and students proudly discussed what each creation meant to them.
