AWESOME Arts Sculpt Lanterns with Derby Senior High School

Published by: AWESOME Arts | 7-Feb-2021
Nannup-based artists Lewis Horne and Lorelle Sinclair travelled up to Derby on Nyikina country to deliver AWESOME Arts' 2020 Creative Challenge Residency with Derby Senior High School from 2nd “ 6th November.
Date: 2nd November 2020 - 6th November 2020
The teachers of DSHS welcomed Lewis and Lorelle as accomplished sculptural artists to workshop the inquiry and creation process of lantern-making and sculptural artforms with their students.

The students and artists explored this residency's theme Tell Me More about the unique biodiversity in Derby. According to the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, six of the world's seven species of sea turtles occur in Kimberley waters! Turtles became the inspiration of the 1-week residency, as students worked with cane and bamboo framing to create an impressive series of large-scale turtle lanterns. One student remarked that the most memorable part of his residency experience was being a turtle mechanic.

The completed lanterns were celebrated with a parade through the school into the dark Performing Ars Space to reveal the shimmering illumination of the internal LED lighting.

These lanterns now permanently hang from Derby High Schools' art room ceiling, proudly displaying the collaborative work of the students. This one-week residency is proudly presented by Healthway and the Go for 2&5 message.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME's core cultural community development program. When they're not running the festival we send artists into schools to offer high quality arts experiences for young people to explore their individual and community identity, communicate their unique identity and instil a sense of pride in who they are and where they live.
