Held in the magnificent concert hall of the Sydney Opera House, the Ballet Scholarship finals will see Australia’s best dancers compete for a top prize of $18,000 and the chance to undertake pre-professional placements with the world’s best ballet companies.

With a total prize pool of $32,000 and more than 200 entrants from across Australia and New Zealand, the scholarship is widely regarded as the most valuable and prestigious award in the southern hemisphere as the greatest dancers come together to compete against one another.

Sixteen-year-old high-school student Emily Sprout from McDowall, QLD, experienced the life-changing opportunities afforded by the Eisteddfod first-hand after winning the Ballet Scholarship in 2022 with a performance of the Aurora Variation from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.

“Winning the scholarship was a surreal moment. I was just so grateful, happy and excited!” said Emily. “Sydney Eisteddfod has helped me to grow as a dancer, build my confidence and mindset, and provided me with the opportunity to achieve my dreams of dancing on the international stage.”

Since winning the scholarship, Emily has gone on to win the Bourse Jeune étoile (Young Star Scholarship) at the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland; one the most highly esteemed ballet competitions in the world.

Also featured in the Dance Gala is the spectacular, Sydney Eisteddfod Dance of Champions. The competition will showcase the most outstanding dance troupes across all age group and genres, performing in a spectacular ‘battle of the best’.

Sydney Eisteddfod has nurtured the Australian performing arts at a grass roots level, since 1933. The 2023 season is no exception, boasting an extensive program of over 350 events, many of which will be held at Chippen Street Theatre - the new home of Sydney Eisteddfod.

Located at 45 Chippen Street, the new fifty seated theatre is fully equipped with a lighting and sound area, as well as a separate foyer space, creating the perfect environment for entrants to perform in.

Take your seat and watch Australia’s best dancers performing on stage for the opportunity of a lifetime. For more information or to book your tickets, visit:
