Art Gallery of South Australia launches major exhibition by Chiharu Shiota
A massive installation comprising almost 200km of red yarn is the centrepiece of a confronting exhibition by the gallery.

The Art Gallery of South Australia has launched Chiharu Shiota: Embodied, which runs from Friday 24 August to Sunday 28 October 2018 and includes a major commissioned acquisition titled, Absence Embodied.
The immersive work incorporates 180 kilometres of red wool anchored by bronze and ceramic castings of the arms and legs of Shiota and her daughter.
The unique drawing in space is the only large-scale permanent installation of Shiota's work in a public institution in the Southern Hemisphere. It will hang in its custom-designed gallery for more than two years.
Embodied is the first major solo survey exhibition of Shiota's work in Australia, and is co-curated by Leigh Robb, Curator of Contemporary Art and Russell Kelty, Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Spanning 25 years, this exhibition explores Shiota's early performances captured through photography, drawing and the moving image, as well as new sculptures and works on paper.
The exhibition also includes three of Shiota's iconic dresses, each measuring over six metres in length, hanging from the façade of the North Terrace entrance of the Art Gallery.
