Mitchell Fine Art presents Steve Lopes's latest exhibition 'Shape for Gods'.
An opening night will be hosted at Mitchell Fine Art on the 13th of October from 6pm to 8pm with the artist in attendance, followed by an artist talk on the 14th from 11am.
This exhibition has been two years in the making following a tumultuous period that gave Lopes cause for greater reflection and contemplation.
Hesitant to elaborate on his own paintings and impose his own narrative, Steve Lopes invites the viewer to contemplate deeply and to draw their own conclusions to what they see.
In a career spanning over 25 years, the figure has always been central to Steve Lopes’ oeuvre, but that has shifted slightly with this exhibition. It is Objects that now play a critical role as Lopes explores the interaction between landscape, the figure, and objects.
‘Shapes for Gods’ is an observation of space and time and the suggestion of personal histories that can be distilled by the presence of particular objects in each work.
“In this collection of works, icons, and deities’ loom. Antiques and other objects become records of the past or talismans of the future that we surround ourselves with. They become reminders of our own humanity, clues to our inner worlds and stories”, says Lopes.
‘Shapes for Gods’ is showing from 10th October – 4th November 2023 at Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
