Allegri Ensemble A Boy Was Born in Hobart and Launceston this week

This week in Hobart and Launceston, hear one of Tasmania's finest chamber choirs sing favourite carols, songs and anthems for Christmas by Mathias, Rutter, Chilcott, Gibbons and others, accompanied by rising Sydney organist Joshua Ryan. The concert will also feature selections from Britten's atmospheric youthful masterwork "A Boy Was Born".

Directed by Andrew Bainbridge, Allegri Ensemble is pleased to present a colourful Christmas program of favourite carols and festive songs. Featuring excerpts from Benjamin Britten's "A Boy Was Born", other works on the program include John Rutter's "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" and "What Sweeter Music"; Bob Chilcott's "The Shepherd's Carol"; John Tavener's "The Lamb"; Orlando Gibbons' "This is the record of John"; and Thomas Tallis' wonderful extended motet "Videte miraculum".

legri Ensemble will also present mid-20th century classics by William Mathias, Colin Brumby, Stephen Jackson, Andrew Carter, William Walton, Richard Rodney Bennett, interspersed with Robert Parsons' sublime "Ave Maria" and Samuel Scheidt's rousing "Ein Kind' geborn". Allegri Ensemble is delighted to be joined by Joshua Ryan, one of Australia's best young organists. Joshua is an Honours student at the University of Sydney Conservatorium and winner of the 2018 Sydney University Medal in Music. He has been organ scholar at Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral, St Stephen's Church, Macquarie Street and Christ Church St Laurence, and works as a freelance performer, accompanist and teacher in Sydney and Canberra. Audience members will be invited to join in singing "O come all ye faithful" and "The First Nowell" in well-loved arrangements by Sir David Willcocks, and the program will conclude with a rousing rendition of William James' Australian carol "Merry Christmas".
