The sublime voices of the highly acclaimed Australian Chamber Choir will fill celestial spaces across Melbourne, Bowral, Sydney, Macedon and Geelong with Bach in the Castle of Heaven, their second program of the 2016 season.

Renowned for his programmatic flair, Director Douglas Lawrence has fashioned a program that contrasts three of JS Bach's masterpieces with a gem from Bach's father-in-law, Johann Michael Bach and famous Latin Motets from other times and places.

Gregorio Allegri's famous Miserere, which the Choir has performed to jubilant European and Australian audiences, sits alongside one of the most difficult pieces in the motet repertoire "“ Messiaen's O sacrum convivium. The program also features Three Latin Motets by Herbert Howells - widely considered to represent a pinnacle of early 20th century English choral music.

The 18-member Australian Chamber Choir, which has six sopranos, four altos, four tenors and four basses, has undertaken five European concert tours, given numerous Australian concerts and released four CDs. The most recent release is Live in Europe 2015, which was recorded in Geneva.

Acclaimed in five countries by audiences and critics alike, glowing reviews and return invitations are testament to the Choir's international standing: ""¦ sensational debut "¦ The choir fulfilled the conductor's intentions with exactitude, clarity and deep understanding" Augsburger Allgemeine, Augsburg, July 2013.

The Choir includes Douglas' wife Elizabeth Anderson, who is also an internationally renowned harpsichordist and their son, Jacob Lawrence who is set to study at the Schola Cantorum in Basel from September. He will fly home from Sydney, where he sings the role of Ubaldo in Haydn's Armida with Pinchgut opera, to sing with the ACC, possibly for the last time in this program.

Bach In The Castle Of Heaven Program:

  • Bach (1685"“1750) Lobet den Herren alle Heiden (BWV 230) for 4-part choir
  • Herbert Howells (1892"“1983) Three Latin Motets Op.38
  • JS Bach Jesu meine Freude (BWV 227) for 5-part choir
  • Johann Michael Bach (1648"“94) Das Blut Jesu Christi
  • Gregorio Allegri (c.1582"“1652) Miserere
  • Olivier Messiaen (1908"“92) O sacrum convivium
  • JS Bach - Singet dem Herren ein neues Lied (BWV 225) for two 4-part choirs
In June and July next year, the Australian Chamber Choir will undertake their sixth concert tour of Europe, taking with them 30 'friends', who will experience an unforgettable immersive choral journey with performances in Rome, Florence, Verona, Vienna, Innsbruck, Lindau, Tübingen and Leipzig, where they will sing in Bach's church: St Thomas.

"In music that seems to penetrate into visionary dreamscapes "¦ The choristers consistently impressed with their exploration of sonority and atmospheric depth" Echo, Darmstadt, July 4, 2015

"The many listeners "¦ were totally captivated by the marvelous sounds conjured by the Australian Chamber Choir "¦ At the end there were several minutes of standing ovation". Schwäbische Zeitung, Ulm, July 17, 2015
