Carlisle Street Arts Space is the new name for the gallery at St Kilda Town Hall, which has showcased local artists since 2008.

Port Phillip Council Mayor Bernadene Voss said the new name makes it clear where the creative space is located, which is particularly helpful for visitors from other parts of Melbourne and interstate.

"Place names are a very practical and helpful way to identify treasured institutions," Cr Voss said.

"So as of January 2018, the wonderful exhibition space formerly known as The Gallery will be officially renamed the Carlisle Street Arts Space.

"The new location-specific name allows us to elevate its community profile. It"s also a clear signal that Carlisle Street Arts Space can host programming across broad arts media and attract an even wider range of talented creatives to showcase their work and reach out to local art and culture enthusiasts.

"We"ve just started the call-out to local artists for applications to be part of Council"s exhibition program next year. And I warmly invite local artists to submit an application form to exhibit at the Carlisle Street Arts Space for 2018."

Council aims to provide a diverse and balanced exhibition program in 2018, displaying works from community groups, individual artists and themed exhibitions sourced from the Port Phillip City Collection.

The new branding for the Carlisle Street Arts Space will be rolled out with future Council correspondence and signage related to the 2018 program.
