ABOUT THE AWARD

With $50,000 in prize money, the SMFACA cements its place as the premier Australian acquisitive ceramic art award. Following on from the 2015 the Award which featured outstanding new works by Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Penny Byrne, Adam John Cullen, Sanné Mestrom and Ruth Hutchinson, the SMFACA continues to be at the leading edge of presenting contemporary ceramic practice.

The SMFACA has offered Australian audiences the opportunity to view the best contemporary ceramic art for over 12 years. With ceramics increasingly utilised by a number of emerging and established contemporary artists, as recent exhibitions such as the 2016 Adelaide Biennial reflected, the possibilities for the medium has significantly expanded. So too have the ideas and themes examined by the artists through this medium.

The five short listed contemporary artists are Glenn Barkley, Karen Black, Laith McGregor, Jenny Orchard and Yasmin Smith.
