Meet Stevl Shefn – an intense, highly-strung, enthusiastic, earnest, downtrodden everyman who speaks an unknown language. It’s a tongue-twisting childish gobbledygook that apparently means something quite different to what it sounds.
Then there’s Fatima – a woman from the same unknown foreign country as Stevl. Except, her voice is very beautiful, low and sophisticated. At odds with Stevl’s playful childishness, she translates for Stevl. But is she actually translating what he’s saying… or having a joke at everyone’s expense???
Combining voice play, physical humour and musical numbers with genuinely witty story telling, DATING THE WORLD is an offbeat and darkly funny lecture on love, which - though sometimes confronting - is ultimately uplifting.
Steve Sheehan studied music before graduating from Flinders University Drama Centre and has pursued further training in clown techniques across the world. His professional performance career has been mainly in Adelaide where he is well respected as one of the city’s finest comic actors and most original stand-up comedians. He is a multi-award winner including best comedy at the Adelaide Fringe.
Fatima is played by Emma Beech - a versatile stage performer who combines acting work in stage and screen with her own theatre-making projects including Homage to Uncertainty at this year’s Sydney Fringe and the residency performance project run by The Australian Bureau of Worthiness of which she is a founding member.
