Pei Pei He and Li Baoying were born in Shanghai and Beijing respectively and both had their initial art education in China. Pei Pei He settled in Melbourne and completed her Fine Art Honours degree from Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. Li Baoying graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and undertook postgraduate programs at COFA in Sydney. Pei Pei He is fascinated by the movement of people and traffic in urban space and the rhythm of city life while Li Baoying loves the Australian wilderness and landscape around Tasmania. Pei Pei He depicts the urban cityscape in Melbourne and Sydney through her meticulously crafted photorealistic black and white oil paintings while Li Baoying captures the wilderness landscape in Tasmania through her photography in different seasons and different times of the day. Different Worlds showcases the works of these two artists with similar background and yet with quite different perspectives on the Australian urban and wilderness landscape.
In March this year, Queen St Gallery will host a solo exhibition by established elbourne-based artist Eolo Paul Bottaro. In this his first solo exhibition in Sydney, a number of recent paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs will be on display in this recently opened art space in the heart of Woollahra’s gallery precinct. While Bottaro’s work is widely known for its representation of Melbourne’s urban underbelly and iconic buildings such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Shrine of Remembrance, and the Royal Exhibition Building, this exhibition will mark the commencement of a series of works that introduce Sydney’s various urban environments as the stage for the dramatic figurative narratives the artist creates.
