Be transported to another time and place as Australia’s Twilight Musical Dialogues Recital Series continues its artistic exploration of five continents. The second installation on Friday April 28 conjures the vibrance and optimism of the Former Kingdom of Bohemia. Internationally acclaimed for her “breathtaking musicality”, artistic director and flautist Sally Walker breathes life into a wonderfully eclectic program of works by Bortak, Brahms, Doppler and Dvorak, in collaboration with Australian born international baritone David Greco – who received rave reviews for his solo performance in the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s Messiah - and remarkable pianist Christopher Allan.

The Former Kingdom of Bohemia was a vast and rich medieval monarchy of Central Europe. Echoes of this extravagant kingdom and its eclectic culture are evident in the elaborate architecture of Austria, Hungary and South Germany; the striking colour and innovation of Bohemian glass and, perhaps most profoundly, in the music of this ‘golden age’.

It has been said that historically, in the battle for Czech independence, the generals were composers and the infantry, orchestras! Composers challenged the musical tradition of Germany with a special kind of harmonic and rhythmic audacity which by the latter part of the nineteenth century had come into its own. As bold and ground-breaking as the new Bohemian architecture, music was intensely cultivated for the entire history of the kingdom - Bartok transmuted peasant folk tunes into contemporary works of art while Dvorak joined the warmth and gaiety of native Czech music to the great classical forms of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.

Find yourself lost in this magical moment in time as the intimate setting of Adamstown’s Uniting Church is transformed into an experience of The Former Kingdom of Bohemia with this hour of virtuosic bliss..... and some engaging surprises! “The richness of the poetry set to music by the composers of this golden age is a real joy” guest artist David Greco said. The joy is tangible as these three immensely talented musicians take to the stage together in their home town, just for this occasion.

Having devoted many years to touring internationally with the world’s greatest orchestras, the world is Sally’s stage. Her passion is to bring an experience of her world of music to her home town of Newcastle while nurturing up-and-coming local talent in the process.

Joining this recital will be featured young artist Neil Simpson – a versatile, multi-instrumentalist and driving force behind Newcastle Improvised Music Association (NIMA).
