Topology - The Singing Politician @ Brisbane Festival Sept 15

BY Heapsaflash | 11-Sep-2017
Aria nominated classical quintet ‘Topology' are renowned for their prolific multi-disciplinary collaborations and in a classy new partnership have teamed up with ensemble-in-residence at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Voices to tour ‘The Singing Politician’, a powerful performance piece that marries iconic Prime Ministerial speeches seamlessly to an overlay of stirring classical music and choral work. Morrison BRISBANE – BRISBANE FESTIVAL - Fri 15 Sept, 7:30pm = ABC STUDIO 420 - 114 Grey St South Bank
Composed by Topology’s masterminds Robert Davidson and John Babbage, plus musical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton, the performance traverses pivotal moments that have shaped our nation. Robert Davidson says "I chose quotes that showed some of the personal connection of each speaker to the event or topic. I was interested in empathising with each politician, to see the person behind the political facade". Exploring themes such as war, indigenous affairs, experiences of women, the depression and the responsibilities and opportunities of public life Davidson explains "These were not pre-conceived themes of the show, but they emerged as areas in which our greatest passions have been stirred".

The Singing Politician takes the words right out of our Prime Ministers’ mouths – from Robert Menzies to Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser to Paul Keating, Bob Hawke to Tony Abbott and celebrates these pivotal moments in Australian history. "The musical accompaniment is always based directly on a careful hearing of the speech recordings – the accompaniment is like a frame that primes the listener to notice the music in the speech. There is no pitch shifting or manipulation – this is simply how people speak. Gough Whitlam seems to favour B-flat major. Tony Abbott favours E-flat major. Julia Gillard seems to veer more towards B major” says Davidson.

“A fascinating and artistically absorbing musico-political event” Limelight Magazine

“It is simultaneously quite serious, quite moving and absolutely hilarious” James Morrison
