PACT Centre for Emerging Artists presents HOME, a new play from Tantrum Youth Arts
BY Alannah Maher | 07-Sep-2017
PACT will present the latest show in their AFTERGLOW season when Home, an original new Australian play by Janie Gibson and the Tantrum Trajectory Ensemble, arrives on their stage from October 4th to 7th.
A dynamic new work developed with the Newcastle-based theatre company Tantrum Youth Arts and their Trajectory Ensemble, Home weaves a sea of stories from original poetry, found texts, songs, myths and music in a personal exploration of what it means to feel at home – in the world, in your country, in your suburb, in yourself.
Director Janie Gibson, an alumni of PACT's contemporary performance training program, has returned to Australia to take the reigns on this emotive production after a decade of developing and performing work with international theatre companies Song of the Goat (Poland) and Shakespeare & Company (USA), among many others.
“It’s a delight to be bringing Janie home to Newcastle to work alongside our ensemble in the development of this new work,” said Tantrum Youth Arts’ Artistic Director, Lucy Shepherd. “HOME truly captures the vibrancy of young peoples’ lived experiences and their dual yearnings for comfort and change in an uncertain future.”
“As an artist who grew up in Newcastle this project is deeply significant for me, both professionally and personally,” said Janie. “As a young artist I swiftly left Newcastle at the age of 18 to seek better opportunities in the big smoke of Sydney. Tantrum are offering emerging artists in Newcastle, opportunities that simply weren’t available to me when I lived there.”
