No More Silence by Wordsmith Theatre Australia
BY EKA Publicity | 17-Jun-2017
"Some don't remember, some will never forget." No More Silence is a vocal and physical exploration of what it means to be a survivor of child sexual abuse. With a script fully comprised of interviews conducted with survivors in Ballarat, No More Silence examines how a community responds to its dark past #nomoresilencetour
No More Silence, a new show produced by Wordsmith Theatre Australia, will tour around regional Victoria this July. The piece is directed by Fae O'Toole and Hannah Davies who first got the idea from the Loud Fence Movement in Ballarat.
"Hannah and I were struck by the Ballarat community’s reaction to the Royal Commission; they tied colourful ribbons on fences as a sign of support. The community managed to transform something painful into something beautiful," Ms O'Toole said.
The two began developing the piece at Federation University as a part of its 2016 Student Theatre Festival after feeling a need to show support for the survivors. Ms Davies said they decided they could contribute through verbatim theatre, a form of creating theatre where interviews are conducted and the script is formed from the exact words of the person interviewed.
"We ended up interviewing thirteen survivors and exploring their words through movement and sound." Ms Davies said.
Profits from this piece go towards supporting the Centre against Sexual Assault in Sebastopol who have supported Wordsmith Theatre Australia in forming this piece and do fantastic work for survivors in Ballarat.
