NAIDOC Week 2017 @ MARS Gallery

BY Erin Kinley | 14-Jun-2017
NAIDOC Week 2017 @ MARS brings together five indigenous Australian contemporary artists from the Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Ngarrindjeri, Worimi, Wadawurrung and Taungurong tribes. Through a mix of old and new media this group show explores themes of cultural dichotomy, the historic representations of First Nation's people, repressed cultural identity and interpretations of Indigenous culture through the everyday items of ancestors.

Exhibiting artist Genevieve Grieves says of her video work in the exhibition, ‘lament’, “…is an act of memorialisation; an act of remembrance. As it is through the recognition of what has gone before - however difficult this journey may be - that we can mourn, heal and find some peace within and between our selves.”

Exhibiting Artists: Damien Shen, Josh Muir, Genevieve Grieves, Jenny Crompton, Steven Rhall

Opening event: Saturday 1 July from 3-5pm, at MARS Gallery, 7 James St, Windsor VIC 3181
