Melbourne producer and performer Youthfire returns with dreamy new single ‘Puppet’

Melbourne gained a keeper when Brisbane-based bedroom producer Stephen Carmichael aka Youthfire relocated south, bringing his highly nuanced sound of indie electronica to thrive in the local electronic music scene. With a back catalog of standout singles that have gained heavy nods from Tonedeaf, Indieshuffle, and triple j unearthed writers just to name a few, Youthfire is back with his brand new track ‘Puppet’, taken from his forthcoming EP due later in the year.
Like a watercolour of creative expression, ‘Puppet’ is a composition that blends saturated hues of vulnerability and raw emotion into a seamless soundscape of intimate honesty. Its restrained rhythms slowly build with textural layers of James Blake-esque vocal hooks with Perfume Genius style dramatisation, to make for a dreamlike reflection of human fragility that is the epitome of Youthfire’s sound.
“I wanted ‘Puppet’ to feel like you’re having an intimate conversation with a close friend. I wanted to sing about trust. In order to explore this, I imagined a character struggling with issues around trust in a relationship. I tried to picture who this character was? What had they gone through? What was overpowering them? I looked for ways to explore this character’s world, singing from their perspective about the complexities of human relationships.” – Youthfire
Written, recorded and produced with Carmichael leading vocals, synths and electric guitar, ‘Puppet’ also features the emphatic strings of cellist Kathryn Mckee, and Jacob de Weger on synth bass in a sonic landscape mixed by Tristan Hoogland (Woodes, Mid Ayr, Ballpark Music) and mastered by Matthew Agoglia (Spoon, The Gorillaz, Arctic Monkeys) at The Ranch Mastering.
