BY Box Hill Community Arts Centre | 10-Apr-2017
This exhibition celebrates the Sister City Relationship between Whitehorse and Matsudo and is the outcome of artist Marynes Avila’s residency at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.

Opening: Thursday 4 May, 6pm – 8pm

The City of Whitehorse has a sister city relationship with Matsudo, a Japanese city on the outskirts of Tokyo. The relationship was developed by the former City of Box Hill in 1971 and continued by the City of Whitehorse in 1994, when local government in Victoria amalgamated.

The two cities participate in an active exchange program for young people, which strengthens cultural understanding and promotes friendly relations. The relationship also promotes economic development opportunities between the two countries.

This exhibition celebrates the Sister City Relationship between Whitehorse and Matsudo and is the outcome of artist Marynes Avila’s residency at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.

Flowers and their meanings are part of the very essence of Japanese daily life and are portrayed in art, clothes and legal documents. By examining the significance and meaning of flowers such as the Chrysanthemum and the Cherry Blossom through drawing, installation, photo microscopy, digital photography and film, the exhibition showcases Avila’s new body of work in conjunction with a collaborative art project created by Koonung Secondary College students and BHCAC visual art students under the guidance of the artist.
