In February 2024, AWESOME artists Calvin Chee and Luke Joseph Ryan travelled to the Purnululu community, on Gija Country, to explore storytelling, performing and mask making with the children.

Working closely with the school, Elders, and the school’s filmmaker Jesse, the students produced a short film that was based on a Gija story called “Two Boys Go Hunting”. Participants collaborated on character development, and design. The students then created and wore unique masks, costumes and props to bring these visions to life.

The young artists explored different performance techniques to confidently portray their characters in film. Participants also explored filmmaking processes such as scene setups and considering visual storytelling through photography.

The residency culminated in a celebration, enjoyed by the whole school. The film will remain in the community to share the story in the future.

“Acting is so much fun” – Participant
“I am having so much fun drawing scary things” -Participant
“I am so good at this” – Participant
“I want to do more cool stuff like this” – Participant
“The kids are very talented at art” -Teacher

Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.

This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2 & 5 message.
