MGA to reopen with a celebration of Australian contemporary photography “ the 2020 Bowness Photography Prize “ onsite and online “ and vote in the Smith & Singer Peoples Choice Award
MGA will thrown open the doors to reveal the 60 shortlisted artworks for the 2020 William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize. In keeping with strict COVID-19 safety protocols visitors can view the exhibition in person from Saturday 21 November 2020 or from the comfort of their own home via a virtual tour wherever they are located. Once visitors have explored the three gallery spaces they can head to the online voting portal to cast a vote in the Smith & Singer People's Choice Award.

MGA is creating more opportunities for audiences to get up close and personal with contemporary photography. MGA is thrilled to partner with Shout Out Loud to bring a selection of ten Bowness Photography Prize images to the streets from 7 December 2020! Locals can also preview a statellite exhibition that includes a selection of works now on display at our permanent gallery space at The Glen shopping centre. Located within the fashion and lifestyle precinct, the MGA Gallery offers a special space for visitors to engage with art, and features works by leading Australian photographers including Narelle Autio, Peta Clancy, Tamara Dean, Anne Ferran, John Gollings, Leila Jeffreys and Fiona MacDonald.

It is fitting the launch marks MGA's re-opening after months of closure due to COVID-19 restrictions as the prize “ the Bowness Photography Prize is a celebration of contemporary photography in Australia and spans the breadth and depth of photographic practice. In 2020 MGA celebrates its 30th anniversary and the Bowness Photography Prize marks its 15th year. Over the last 15 years, the Bowness Photography Prize has emerged as an important annual survey of contemporary photographic practice in Australia and one of the most prestigious prizes in the country. The prize continues to showcase excellence in photography.
In response to COVID-19 restrictions and the impact on the arts sector the MGA Foundation has made a number of alterations to the prize this year including extending the exhibition period over summer with a commitment to ensuring a physical as well as a virtual exhibition.
The judging panel this year is comprised of acclaimed artist Fiona Hall, NGA Senior Curator of Photography, Dr Shaune Lakin, and MGA Director, Anouska Phizacklea. Not deterred by the current restrictions, the judging panel selected the shortlist from over 1,000 entries, the most that has been received in the prize's history. The amount and calibre of the entries necessarily sparked a robust debate around narrowing down the field and landing on works that speak to such a challenging and pivotal moment in history. The judges will reconvene in January to select the $30,000 winner and three Colour Factory Honourable Mentions. The announcement of the winner, Smith & Singer People's Choice Award recipient of $5,000, and the Colour Factory Honourable Mentions will be celebrated at a special event to be confirmed in January 2021.
