Belvoir presents Lose to Win
Belvoir is excited to bring Mandela Mathia’s extraordinary autobiographical solo show Lose to Win to the stage from 25 April to 19 May 2024.

Through spoken word, song and comedy Mandela (The Cherry Orchard) extends a heartfelt invitation for audiences to join him on his remarkable journey from South Sudan to Egypt and finally all the way to Belvoir St.

Fleeing his war-torn home as a child, Mandela spent many years journeying, searching, and eventually finding his way to the stage. This is a joyful, poignant performance, straight from the man who lived it.

A celebration of the South Sudanese community, of resilience, and the power of imagination, Lose to Win is an astonishing modern Australian story.

“This show is about events of my life from birth all the way to Australia, where I explore the theme of self-acceptance, perseverance and hopes. This show kind of helps give young people, everyone, the hope to reinvent themselves and feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel,” said Mandela.

“Few actors bring Mandela’s warmth, depth and breadth to the Belvoir stage. When we were rehearsing The Cherry Orchard and Sami in Paradise he shared anecdotes of his life that would make every jaw drop. Now, in the sure hands of Jessica Arthur’s direction, he’s put his life into a piece of theatre that’s by turns charming and flat-out remarkable. He’s a treasure of the Belvoir stage,” said Belvoir Artistic Director Eamon Flack.

Directed by Jessica Arthur (The Wolves), Lose to Win is an intimate, generous, and inspiring night of storytelling that is bound to pull on heartstrings and leave audiences with a renewed sense of hope.
